Home Security 101 - 10 Simple Ways to Secure Your Home

Marc Camp • May 25, 2022

A few simple home security tips can go a long way...

1. Secure the doors

Don’t let a burglar stroll in through the front door (34% of them do!). Inspect all of your exterior doors to make sure the door frames are strong, the hinges are protected, and-if your door has a mail slot -that someone can’t reach through it to unlock the door.

If you are moving into a residence that someone else used to call home, change the door locks. That way you won’t have strangers out there with a key to your house, and you can make sure your door locks are exactly what you need.

2. Lock the windows

According to theft experts, windows are a very common entry point for criminals and may be left shut but unlocked by the previous homeowner. Plus, manufacturer latches on windows aren’t always effective and sometimes made out of inferior parts. You can beef up security with aftermarket window locks or key operated levers. Installing window or glass break sensors is another great option.

3. Light up the landscape

Bad guys don’t like to be in the spotlight. Place lights around your property, near the garage, and other structures. This will make unwanted guests uncomfortable and make your property safer for invited guests at the same time. Motion activated lights, solar powered lights, smart outlets, are all effective remedies.

4. Set up a security system

Your home should have some form of security system, whether it’s a basic system or one that comes with professional monitoring and home automation features. Choose a system you are comfortable with by evaluating the needs of your neighborhood and your house. A security consultant from Barcom Security would be happy to do an evaluation of your needs at no cost. It’s important to consider the value of professional installation, customer service and reputation, smart home capabilities, upfront and monthly costs, and extras like smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring.

All this can be easily done with a keypad or phone app.

5. Don’t forget the garage

This entry point is becoming more popular with bad guys. Even if they can’t access your house, you probably have plenty of toys and equipment stored in there. Make it a habit to lock all garage doors. Keep the garage door opener in the house instead of leaving it in your car where a burglar could grab it. And always keep your security code totally confidential. There are many ways to keep your garage more secure including upgrading to a smart garage door opener and installing a driveway alarm.

6. Eliminate hiding places

Trees and shrubs may give your house curb appeal, but they also give bad guys a nifty place to hide out. Trim trees and plants near your house that could be used for cover. Always put away stools and ladders that could help an intruder gain access. Lock gates and sheds and other outdoor buildings. Don’t leave your pricey goods on display in the yard and makes sure to display the yard signs and stickers provided by your security company.

7. Add security cameras

You’ve probably seen headlines about burglars and porch pirates being foiled by security camera footage. This is one home security solution that works as both a deterrent and a means of justice. You can get security cameras that are part of a complete security package or that work on their own. We recommend using cameras that have a mobile app, that way you can see footage in real time and store it if you ever need to go to the police. Also take into consideration motion detection, night vision, Wi-Fi capability, two way talk, local or cloud storage, and weatherproof casing for outdoor cameras.

8. Get a safe

In the event that an intruder somehow gets past your security system strategies, make sure that valuables are protected. An in-home safe is a secure depository for everything from jewelry to vital documents. You want a safe that is fire-resistant, waterproof, and heavy enough that a thief can’t walk away with it.

9. Use home automation

If you’ve been tempted to turn you house into a smart home, security is one compelling reason to follow through. Home automation gives you remote or scheduled control of lights, door locks, security cameras, smoke alarms, and other safety devices. You can get real-time alerts about suspicious activity so that you can respond quickly and thwart potential thieves.

10. Prevent house fires

Take measures to prevent house fires. Inspect current fire alarms and CO detectors to make sure they are working properly. Install new detectors as necessary. Check the charge and expiration date on current fire extinguishers. Replace them as necessary. Call a professional chimney inspector before warming up in front of a crackling fire. Oh, and don’t forget to have a fire exit plan that everyone in the house is aware of and practice it from time to time.

Final Word

Figuring out how to secure your home doesn’t have to be an intimidating chore. Don’t be afraid to call a professional to help you uncover risk factors and design an adequate plan. Try not to put off this. The worst time to think about home security is after there has already been a theft or fire. Thank for reading these tips and…have a secure day!
